We are now beginning a project to support the further education of the Kenyan girl child. We have decided to focus on secondary education, matching U.S. sponsors with Kenyan girls currently in grades 7 or 8.

UPDATE!

The girls and boys sponsored are all in place in their respective secondary schools and are doing well! The first term is underway!

Yesterday, Milton Ochieng, just returned from Kenya, wrote "Mary Oyamo from Tuk Jowi was about to be married off after 8th grade despite having achieved the best grade in the national examinations in her class. Her guardians had no money for her education and so they were going to marry her off until they heard news that she was going to be one of the beneficiaries. Then the chief had to intervene as well to have her brought back home and now she is safely in high school, her path in life having been changed..."

Mary is one of the 11 students already fully sponsored for the next 4 years!

***Delivery of Funds*** and VANDERBILT invovement

All funds for this academic year- beginning in the end of January 2006- will be hand delivered by Milton Ochieng (a dartmouth grad and vanderbilt medical student who is a Kenyan native) or wired directly to secondary school accounts.

ALSO- A group of undergrads from Vanderbilt University will be assisting us this summer. They will be on the ground in the villages, checking on the delivery of services, the girls' progress, and helping identify more candidates for next year.

Hanover Connections!

We're very happy to be working with dartmouth students and residents of Hanover now to expand the scope and extend the reach of our project. We'll post information regarding an upcoming fundraising dinner soon!
